Stone planter removed from cenotaph

A stone planter, which was one of a matching pair, has gone missing from the front of Alderley Edge cenotaph.

Cllr Melanie Connor reported the incident at this week's Parish Council meeting, saying "I have checked with the school, church and Cheshire East. It has not been broken by anybody so somebody has come along and taken something off the cenotaph - which I think is deplorable.

"We need to get something in there to make it look right for November and I think the Parish Council should do this. I think it's very important we do it. I don't want to have this bun fight with Cheshire East asking them to fund it as we could still be doing that in a year's time and quite obviously they are only interested on Crewe and Sandbach for cenotaphs and nowhere else."

She added "I cannot believe that somebody has taken a trough of flowers from the cenotaph, it's disgraceful.

"I checked round the church grounds to see if it had been broken, if somebody had put it somewhere and its nowhere."

As it will probably be difficult to match, the Parish Council agreed to purchase two stone troughs if necessary and move the remaining one to the back of the cenotaph.

The Parish Council will also be requesting that Cheshire East Council clean the cenotaph ahead of next's month Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service.

If anybody has any information about the missing stone tough please contact Alderley Edge Parish Council on 01625 582400.

David, you are being too kind to them. As an ex-serviceman, I find these people below contempt.
What a sad world.

Over the years I have had many conversations with my children about the cenotaph and we have attended numerous services for Rememberance Sunday. I have always said to them that although there is a lot of bad in the world this is one place that is respected and the fact the numerous wreaths that can be left for any weeks without being touched proves this.

How very sad to think there is someone out there prepared to steal anything from this special place.

The Parish Council have voted, by a majority, to buy a pair of stone troughs to be set in the war memorial...they will be larger and heavier than the missing one... so hopefully they can't be removed... they will be 'planted up' before Armistice Day... within reason, we decided that the cost would not be important... the people being remembered by the war memorial are those who died for their country and those who are still fighting and no price can be put on that.
