The newly formed Wilmslow and Alderley Edge Marie Curie Cancer Care Fundraising Group celebrated their launch on 6th August, and immediately set out their plans to raise funds to provide care for local people with cancer and other terminal illnesses.

The group members are made up of local volunteers and supporters who will hold local and national events and help out with collections.

Chair of the group, Polly Keen said, "I am delighted to be involved in the launch of the new Wilmslow and Alderley Edge fundraising group and honoured to be nominated Chairman - a challenge which I am looking forward to very much indeed.

"Our group is made up of enthusiastic, active people from various backgrounds, all intent on raising funds for the wonderful work carried out by our Marie Curie nurses, who care day and night for patients who may require long term care. Most patients with terminal illness express a desire to die in their own homes, with the close support and love of their nearest and dearest.

"Sadly, my Mother died in February this year aged 90. She had been a Marie Curie night nurse for many years when I was a teenager. She always said what a privilege and honour it was to nurse terminally ill patients, whilst also caring for the needs of their relatives. When I read Holly Smith's advert requesting fundraising volunteers in the June/July 2013 issue of "INSIDE" I decided to join in memory of my precious Mum. Her work, and the work which still carries on today for those in great need, is made possible as a result of the commitment and hard work of fundraising groups like ours throughout the country."

Polly added "If anybody is interested in joining the group, please come along to our next meeting on Tuesday 1st October at 7.00pm and thereafter every first Tuesday in the month, at 'The Wizard', Alderley Edge. We look forward to seeing you. On behalf of our group, I would like to thank the management and staff of 'The Wizard' for the warm welcome shown to us, together with their generosity in providing such a lovely venue."

Local Fundraiser Holly Smith said, "Congratulations to the brilliant volunteers that have helped us form a fundraising group in Wilmslow & Alderley Edge! Marie Curie Cancer Care's Fundraising Groups are a fantastic way to get together with other supporters of the charity, meeting once a month or so, to look after a range of fundraising activity in the area.

"The support of these Fundraising Groups is absolutely invaluable to us and a group like this will certainly make fundraising even more fun for our supporters in Wilmslow and Alderley Edge, not to mention helping to bring in more money to fund our nursing service across the area. They also really help us spread the word about our invaluable nursing service, which provides high quality nursing care, totally free, to give people with terminal cancer and other illnesses the choice of dying at home supported by their families."
