Piano teacher Tony Hughes found a novel way to promote his new business last weekend, he took a stall at the Wilmslow Show.

Tony says "Although I have only been in Wilmslow two years, my wife has lived here all her life and she was convinced the Wilmslow Show was a good way to gauge local interest in piano lessons. Although I am not going to tell everyone - she was absolutely right!"

Tony had a thriving business teaching piano and music theory for a number of years in Nantwich and whilst he still teaches a few of his old pupils, he largely stopped teaching on his move to Wilmslow.

Tony explains "We had a young baby and I decided to limit the teaching I was doing until he was a bit older, though I have still been doing some of my accompanying and performance work."

He is one half of the successful piano duo Dolby and Hughes, which has performed in both Alderley Edge and Wilmslow.

Now the time is right to start teaching full time again and Tony has started looking for local pupils.

"The show was great for me. I booked 4 trial lessons on the day, those pupils have already been for a lesson this week and have booked continuing lessons as a result. There were also lots of positive conversations with both adults and children, who are interested in learning to play. I am confident some of that will result in more new pupils."

Tony is happy to teach both adults and children. Although the right age for starting lessons will depend on the individual child and their concentration levels, in his experience they need to be at least 5 years old. In contrast his oldest starter was 78 years old! He can teach all Grades, up to and including Diploma level.

"I am also taking on Theory pupils up to grade 5. Some instrumental teachers don't teach Theory of Music during lessons and this can leave their pupils at a disadvantage when they get to the higher grades."

Based on Racecourse Road in Wilmslow (by Lindow Common), lessons are usually half an hour and a term of 10 lessons is £150. The first lesson is free. He is happy to do trial lessons over the summer so that a pupil can be booked in to start properly in September.
