Cricket: Alderley continue to climb the table

On Saturday Alderley Edge 1st XI notched up a 2nd successive victory, and a 5th win of the season in the Cheshire County League Premiership, with a convincing win at Didsbury.

Batting first on a pitch which was never easy and assisted the spinners in particular, Alderley's middle order batted very well as a unit, an excellent partnership between Calum Rowe (76) and Jon Steele (42), with good support from Jason Whittaker and Charlie Reid, seeing the team through to a useful total of 218-9 from 55 overs.

All-rounders Reid and Whittaker then set about the Didsbury batting, taking 5-33 and 3-44 respectively, as the home team were shot out for 95, with Ethan Harding also chipping in with a couple of useful wickets. So after a slow start to the season, at the half way stage Alderley have picked up very well, lying in 6th place.

The 2nd XI remained hot on the heels of leaders Neston with an exciting 4 wicket victory at home to Didsbury, overtaking their opponents' score of 191 with an over to spare. Chris Cook took five wickets and Ben Davis three, while the successful run chase was underpinned by Marc Chan's 49 and Dave Leonard's 41, but with 70 still needed from 9 overs it took some lusty hitting from Simon Pickering to get Alderley over the line.
