Guides desperate for new leaders

More than half the Guiding units in Alderley Edge are in urgent need of new adult leaders. Some face closure and two have already closed.

With more than 250 girls who are currently Rainbows, Brownies or Guides – and nearly 50 more on the waiting list to join – the leadership situation is becoming critical.

Judy Povey, a member of the District Guiding Team, said: "A number of retired Guiders have stepped into the breach to hold the fort – but the situation is not sustainable – and new leaders are desperately needed in Alderley Edge, Chelford, Prestbury and Mottram St Andrew."

Judy, a former Guider and retired District Commissioner, has stepped in to keep Alderley Guides - one of the oldest units in the country – from closing, following the sudden death of Guider Karen Ecclestone in December. Other former leaders have temporarily come out of retirement to keep Alderley Edge 4th Brownies from closure. Both Chelford Rainbow and Chelford Guide units have already closed – the latter after more than 80 years in the village – although Chelford Brownies is still operating.

"There's no shortage of girls wanting to join," said Judy. "They and their parents see Guiding as a wonderful chance for girls to enjoy a huge variety of activities and opportunities; to develop their skills and social confidence in a girl-only environment.

"But in today's busy world, fewer and fewer adults seem willing to volunteer an hour or so a week to help these youngsters become part of the largest organisation for girls in the world."

Alderley Edge Guiding District is looking for adults between the ages of 18 and 65, either to train as warranted Guiders in uniform, to assist or run a unit, or to become Unit Helpers and assist at meetings. Full training support is given.

"Besides the reward of helping youngsters develop, for our leaders it's also a great social life, a chance for some fantastic activity or travel experiences – and a great plus for your CV, particularly for young people starting their careers," said Judy. "Employers value the leadership and organisational skills that being a Guider instils."
