Council will deal with the weeds

Cheshire East Council has confirmed that they will be spraying the weeds along the kerbs and pavements in the village.

Cllr Mary Maczkowiak raised the issue of the state of the pavements and streets at this week's Parish Council meeting.

She informed her fellow councillors that there has been no weed spraying at all by Cheshire East in the village this year, commenting "That's another thing that's lapsed. If you go down George Street the weeds are that bad that they are half way across the pavement."

Cllr Mike Williamson responded "They are supposed to weed in the spring. They did it last year definitely, it is disappointing if they haven't done it and it would be interesting to know why."

I contacted Cheshire East to ask if they were intending to carry out spraying in the village this year to deal with the weeds on the pavements and roadsides, and if so when.

Councillor David Topping, Cabinet member in charge of the environment, said: "Cheshire East Council's highways team will be carrying out two weed sprays in Alderley Edge this year along kerbs and parts of the footway.

"The chemicals used are contact sprays and, therefore, we have to judge very carefully when to apply them to ensure we get most value from application.

"We have held off to this point but are likely to commence over the next couple of weeks across the Borough."

The weeds are certainly unattractive and relatively easily removed by spraying, but I'm much more concerned about breaking my neck falling over the broken and irregular pavements on London Road, George Street and many others. And what about that huge pothole and its satellite holes outside The Yard on South Street? Lisa Reeves posted a large photo of this some weeks, I reported the problem to the council, someone put a small amount of tar in half of the main pothole and then all activity ceased.

I probably won't take legal action if I bump into a weed, but I definitely will if I fall in a hole and break my leg.

They will come and spray the weeds, then what we have is a lot of dead weeds in the same place, still an eyesore. Contact sprays are ok for killing annual weeds, no good for perennials weeds (systemic required) but all this is way to late as all the dandelions etc have already set seed weeks ago, so next years crop is already waiting to burst forth. Sounds like money is the problem, keep hold of it till someone moans about them, then we'll spray(late)
