Volunteers clock speeding vehicles on Ryleys Lane

A team of four volunteers spent an hour measuring the speed of passing vehicles on Ryleys Lane this afternoon.

The local Community Speed Watch group clocked forty-six vehicles travelling at speeds of between 35mph and 55 mph whilst travelling in the 30 mph limit between 2.15pm and 3.15pm today.

Volunteer Kriss Coombs said "This is similar to the numbers we recorded when stationed on Macclesfield Road, Congleton Road and Brook Lane. However, despite numerous complaints regarding Heyes Lane the figures shown there were relatively low."

The Alderley Edge Community Speed Watch group was established last year in a bid to address the issue of speeding vehicles in the village and the volunteers have been trained in the use of a speed gun.

Motorists who are clocked travelling at an excessive speed by the volunteers are sent a warning letter from the police, notifying them that if they are caught again, they could face a fine and three points on their licence.

Kriss Coombs added "Since we commenced this project nine months ago, letters have been posted to hundreds of offending motorists. Just think what we could achieve if more people were to volunteer one hour a fortnight or whatever they could manage."

Anyone interested in volunteering for the group should contact PCSO Jim Newns on 07948 522130.
