Trafford Road garage as it used to be

Image 2

The closure of Alderley Motor Co. last week marked the end of an era as a garage has operated from the Trafford Road site for over 40 years.

Following our report that the car servicing centre and neighbouring showroom closed on Thursday 4th April, to enable the owner Russell Homes to demolish the properties and replace them with four semi-detached town houses, we were kindly sent the above photo showing how the garage used to look.

We thought some of our readers would like to see how that part of the village looked nearly 30 years ago, though the changes over the next year or two will be more notable. You can also see there has been a big change in the price of petrol!

If you have any old photographs of the village which you would like to share with the readers of alderleyedge.com please do email them through to [email protected] with a brief description of when and where they were taken.

Thank you to Mrs Paulene Pitt for sharing the above photo with us.

Updated: I was initially told and reported that the photo had been taken in the 1970s but thanks to our readers this has now been corrected and we understand it was taken in 1986.

Apologies, this is extremelely anal of me but looking at the VW Golf and what looks to be either a Maestro or Micra at the rear of the shot, I would suggest this is an early 80's pic. I neither lived in the village or bought Petrol during this time so maybe an other reader could substantiate if the pumps and canopy existed and/or the cost of 4* per litre at that time.

I think the prices used to be top for litre and bottom for gallon, and these prices would indicate a circa 1982 price - and yes the pumps and the canopy existed.

A local Stockport resident has been keeping a list of petrol prices for many years. His value for 1984 is 38.7p per litre http://bit.ly/9gwTDN

This photo is one of a seris of photos Mr John Pitt took in 1986, of various places around the village. We move here in Nov 1990 and I remember filling up with petrol there. I think the pumps went in late1991 .
