Children in danger as crossing unfixed in a week

The traffic lights outside Alderley Edge School for Girls have been out of operation for over a week now.

Two caretakers, wearing high vis jackets, have been operating the crossing on Wilmslow Road in the mornings and after school every day, but at other times it is unmanned.

Cllr Joseph Bergin said "While during busy collection periods there's normally two people stopping the traffic, which has worked very effectively, I have observed that outside those core hours the men with visibility jackets are not there and twice I've stopped because there's young girls trying to get across the road. People are not slowing down and it is actually quite dangerous.

"I'm slightly worried that when those guys are not there little girls are going to try and cross the road and get knocked over because people drive very fast along that particular bit and without those traffic lights the girls still try and cross where the traffic lights are. So I think it is a matter of urgency."

Sue Goff, Head teacher at AESG said "The pelican failed to work last Monday (i.e. a week ago) - as soon as we noticed it we reported it to the Council - and have been chasing it every day.

"Their inspector phoned on Friday to say that the lights have suffered a power failure, and they are waiting for the power company to sort it out. They do realise that it is a well used crossing and that our girls are in danger when they cross the road there at the moment, and will try to fix it asap. We continue to chase them every day, I can assure you!"

Mrs Goff added "In the meanwhile it is indeed our two caretakers who are trying to ensure the safety of our girls. Clearly it is a difficult one as we do not have any jurisdiction over the public highway but we could not run the risk of our girls trying to cross on their own.

"They were delighted to receive a card from one of the parents thanking them for doing this for the girls - it helped to offset the freezing cold and running the gauntlet of the cars and persuading them to stop to let our girls cross!"

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said "There is no supply to the lighting columns. We are going to press for the electricity company to resolve it as soon as possible."

Updated 16th March 8pm:

A spokesperson for Electricity North West, said: "A street light and a pedestrian crossing on London Road in Alderley Edge have not been in operation due to a possible cable fault. We have been working in partnership with Cheshire East Council to restore the lights as quickly as possible and our engineers are currently on site repairing the fault.

"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Full congratulations for the immediate, albeit inevitably provisional, remedial safety action taken by the school. I cannot but deplore the stupid, horribly selfish and potentially criminal driving manners of a number of mainly male drivers as I have personally witnessed in the last few days. What a shame that Cheshire Police has not seemed fit to have some hand-held speed cameras in operation at random days and times on that spot, especially when the poor, brave wardens are off duty or have to beat retreat because of the cold.Does it have to mourn a victim for action of this kind to be taken?

It is to be hoped that it doesn't take the Council as long to effect a repair to these traffic lights as it did to fix the fence between Nether Alderley Primary School and the road. They too reported the problem repeatedly without a result. It's too late when there has been a hideous accident.

The 2 men crossing us all over in the morning are doing a fantastic job thank you to them. is it going to take a serious accident before anything will be done as usual as the saying goes "Every child matters" so lets see some evidence sooner rather than later.

Nicky, people are getting annoyed due to being in a traffic jam through length of village or all the way to the bypass. They are stopping the traffic too much and not allowing a group to gather first before stopping the traffic. It's this, and the fact they have no authority to stop the traffic in the first place that may be getting people rather annoyed.

I think you will find Craig, that at that time in the morning the traffic is always backed up from the by-pass and it doesn't help with the idiots that feel they can park up anywhere on Brook Lane to drop off their children which then causes a danger for cars turning into Brook Lane. How there hasn't been an incident God only knows! Keep up the good work the 2 men in hi viz!

I have seen people abuse a lollipop lady for just doing her job, disgraceful. Do some think a few seconds to stop whilst children cross a very busy road is to much to ask. Are they and their journeys more important than the safety of children. It's also a disgrace that these lights are still not working. The two men should be shown more respect, people should not need 'persuading' to let children cross a main road in safety. Shocking.

I notice that no one tells us which electricity provider is at fault here.

Seems like its easy to say rude things about motorists and to blame the caretakers for not being efficient - but these are all symptoms of the problem.

The real problem is the failure to repair the lights. Who is the provider - we should be told.....

What about batteries as a temporary measure why the various authorities continue to pass the buck?

What about giving them a lollipop sign at least they would be even more visible and have a warning symbol that they are going to stop the traffic.

Work started on repairing the crossing last night. It is not yet fixed so temporary traffic lights are in operation outside AESG on Wilmslow Road today.

So they started it then left it!! Should this not of been done over the weekend or is overtime to much to pay than an accident to happen!! You now have around 10 seconds between light changes to cross the road and thats not including the amber gamblers!! Good luck Kids. Oh and the elderly that use that crossing a lot!!
