Alderley Edge Parish Council are continuing to push for improvements at the cemetery following complaints that the state of it was a "total disgrace".

Last week some evergreen plants were planted as you enter the cemetery, funded by the Parish Council.

In May 2012 Cllrs Sue Joseph, Duncan Herald, Mary Maczkowiak and Melanie Connor carried out an inspection of the cemetery and produced a report detailing all the issues they would like addressing.

Since then they have held several meetings with officers from Cheshire East Council and are pleased that improvements have been made and the neglected cemetery is looking tidier.

Cllr Duncan Herald said "We hope that the Parish Council can continue to liase with Cheshire East officers to organise further work at the cemetery to ensure that the cemetery is upgraded to a state where it is something that the village can be proud of."

Work completed to date includes clearing the path to the cemetery, clearing moss from the main roads, hedge cutting and the removal of damaged bollards.

Works will shortly be carried out to erect the fallen tombstones and Cheshire East has also been approached to put up a new sign for the cemetery, which is visible from the road, to repair the damaged footpath outside the cemetery and paint the windows at the front of the gatehouse.

Cllr Herald added "Once the works have been completed, there will be a great need for a Friends of Alderley Edge Cemetery group and it is hoped that Community Payback will get involved in cleaning the memorials and small plaques."

Several people have already come forward to express their interest in setting up a Friends of the Cemetery. Email Cllr Duncan Herald if you would like to join them.
