Elderley driver crashes into parked cars

DSC_2746

A motorist travelling into Alderley Edge has smashed into a row of cars parked on Congleton Road.

At approximately 11.40am today an elderly gentleman "momentarily lost control" and crashed his Fiat Panda into an Audi parked outside the owners home, which was then nudged into his wife's car (both of which were parked legally).

An officer at the scene said "I think it was a low speed collision but four cars have been damaged.

"The elderly driver, who is in his 80s, was a bit shaken up by the incident and is currently being checked over in the ambulance."

It is clear that the cars which were crashed into were parked legally, but it would be interesting to know whether there were also cars parked illegally which the driver had just had to manoeuvre around. It would be unusual if there weren't. I drive down Congleton Road regularly, and often have to decide whether to give way to vehicles coming up the hill or to trust that vehicles coming up the hill will allow sufficient room to be able to pass safely. Drivers coming up the hill reasonably assume that they have right of way, some pull over enough to allow safe passing, some don't.

Ban the old fella, shouldn't be allowed on the road in the first place. Funny about the cars though if they were illegally parked, ha!

The cars that were knocked we're parked 'legally' Steve.

I am sure that will be the end of the elderly man's driving days anyway. Just glad no one was hurt.

No matter the parking is legal or illegal, this shows just how dangerous it is to park along side such narrow and busy road. Hope the people that 'day parking' there would wise up and park more sensible and responsible. Next time we may not be so lucky and someone may get injuried.

The road isn't narrow until nearer the 40 zone, and can easily accommodate 2 lanes plus parking. I'd prefer to see the road space used properly, move the white line over a bit with a single dotted line all the way, and parking spaces marked out on the side people are parking on anyway.

The town now has a bypass, so the road layouts should reflect this, lower speed limit through town, table speed bumps (like Presbury has). On other roads (like Trafford road where the speed through this residential road is just crazy) parking should be added and some double yellows removed, as it slows traffic down with parked cars in the way. Did anyone notice the speed reduction on Hayes lane when they were building the houses where the Royal Oak was, the parked trade vans slowed the traffic down.

Craig is correct that the road is wide enough to accommodate 2 lanes plus parking if the white lines were re-marked accordingly. That should also help with the danger arising from the fact that people are parking right up to and over the brow of the hill. The same approach would be helpful on London Road, and would also assist the flow of traffic through the village.

You also gain a lot of legal all day parking for workers in the town. Using the double white lines as the reason to not park over the brow is just an excuse to not rethink the entire layout, it's a B road now, not a main A road, and has a weight limit on it as well.

Notice the PCSO was talking photos of cars here this afternoon ( Sat ) . Please could something be done urgently about the cars parked on double yellow lines on Heyes Lane next to Moss Rose. They park on the pavement and cause pedestrians to have to walk out into the road on a very dangerous bend. They should simply be towed away given the danger they cause.

Frequently cars are parked on Congleton road up to almost to the opposite of Beechfield Rd.This is now the second accident caused because of parked cars i hope it will be the last but i doubt it ,and woe betide those responsible for not doing anything if someone dies .
Heyes lane is amazing there are no yellow lines or parking restrictions yet cars are parked frequently all day from Ravenswood buildings to the old police station ,forcing drivers travelling towards Alderley village to drive round the bends on the wrong side of the road WHY?????

Hoping that "people" will drive more slowly (as I agree they should!) just because there are cars parked, is simply wishful thinking. We've lived by Congleton Road for years. When there was no bypass, the traffic was slow during rush hour by force - the rest of the time cars were driven at a ferocious speed. With the by-pass there is nothing to stop some drivers still driving at outrageously dangerous speeds given that it is a residential area (with a purpose built home for elderly people alongside it, what is more). We've noticed how over the last 12 months or so, how much more aggressive many drivers are (more often than not, I'm afraid, the drivers of 4wd vehicles) and if one has the temerity to slow down in approaching your own driveway, or when driving through the village trying to see if their is a space to park, indicating all the while, you get hooted at. Clearly many are still using the Village as a through route instead of the by-pass and resent people who want to use the Village shops. What we need is sensible and effective speed controls - until there are Congleton Road is a series of accidents waiting to happen - and one accident is one too many.
