Girl Guides help treat the troops

Girl Guides took a break from their weekly meeting to support a campaign to provide sweet treats for British soldiers stationed in Afghanistan this Valentine's Day.

Twelve girls from the 1st Alderley Edge Girl Guide Unit, along with their leader Judy Povey and two helpers, popped in to Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe on Monday, 28th January, to help wrap and pack shoe boxes which are bound for the servicemen and women.

The Guides have been thinking about peace as they prepare to celebrate World Thinking Day on 22nd February and the 1st Alderley Edge Guides have chosen Afghanistan as their country to focus on, so the campaign fitted in well and gave them the opportunity to get involved in the project.

The girls also carefully selected lots of tasty treats to send themselves and made their own Valentines cards with special goodwill messages to go in the boxes.

Forty shoe boxes have now been filled with sweets and treats to help put a smile on the soldiers' faces on Valentine's Day.

Judy O'Brien from Mr Simms said, "Thank you so much to all our enthusiastic customers, local businesses and suppliers for so generously adding to our contributions for the well deserving troops."

Operation Shoebox are collecting the boxes on Saturday 2nd February to ensure that they arrive in time for Valentine's Day. Judy is in need of about more eight shoe boxes so if anyone has any empty shoe boxes they could drop off at the shop this would be much appreciated.

The district World Thinking Day celebration will take place at Alderley Edge Methodist Church on February 25th when 14 units, involving up to 200 girls from rainbows through to young adults will be taking part.
