A local boy from Alderley Edge has been awarded Oxford University’s prestigious GA Wainwright Schools Essay Prize.

The announcement, which was made in The Times Newspaper this week came after 17-year-old Hugh Williamson submitted an essay on the archaeology of Ancient Egypt.

An avid fan of history and archaeology, Hugh regularly seeks out co- curricular opportunities to support his studies; he first spotted this particular competition online before mentioning it to his teachers.

He said: “I was so surprised to win this prize but am obviously delighted to have been selected. I think my win was down to both my general interest and research in the field and the support of my teacher Mr Hern, who has given me lots of advice in broadening my knowledge in this area of history.”

Details of Hugh’s 5,000 word essay will also be featured on the Oxford University website. His prize was awarded by the Gerald Averay Wainwright Fund which aims to encourage the study of non-classical archaeology of the countries of the Middle East. It is something which Hugh covers in his History A Level course. He hopes to study Egyptology at Oxford next year.

Dr Christopher Ray, High Master at The Manchester Grammar School said: “This is a magnificent achievement.  The Wainwright prize is a much coveted award, established sixty years ago, and I am delighted that Oxford has recognised Hugh’s tremendous scholarship.”
