Medical centre project slips

Work is ongoing to build a new medical centre at the front of the Festival Hall, however the project has fallen behind schedule.

The intention was for work to start towards the end of last year, to create a new entrance to the Festival Hall so that the Hall can continue to operate during construction of the medical centre.

Cllr Mike Williamson informed fellow councillors at this week's meeting that "the project has slipped and there will be no work starting until after the Music Festival in May."

He added "The intention is for it to be an 8 to 9 month contract so the work will be finished and occupancy will be taken prior to the following May Festival with the caveat that if there is any building problems or very bad weather the building project might get delayed but we'll have to manage that.

"We'll know better as we progress the year. We'll keep working at it but at the moment it is bogged down with the PCT.

"It's all working progress but it is beginning to come to the point where it is all suddenly going to become real."

Dr Edwin Thompson told me "We are working on the legal and technical aspects of the project at present. We don't have a definite date for commencement of the building works, but expect it to be immediately following the music festival."

Plans to build a new medical practice at the front of the Festival Hall were approved in August 2012.

The three storey extension will provide modern medical facilities with nineteen consultation/treatment rooms for use by the Alderley Edge Medical Practice and additional medical specialisms, such as a physio and a skin lesion clinic. The proposal also includes a ground floor pharmacy, offices, a patient lift and minor surgery rooms.

I still harbour a lingering hope that this monstrosity will never get off the ground; especially if the incompetence displayed during the procurement phase extends into the construction phase.

What I cannot understand is if the medical centre is all singing and dancing and is supposed to be the answer to all our dreams, why does it takes over 10 days to get a appointment to see a doctor at this present time (today for instance only one doctor on duty) If the time waiting for appointments is going to be the same when do we finally get a new medical centre why bother? Oh meant to add need to go off to A&E it takes a lot longer but at least I will get seen!
