Final preparations are underway for the Alderley Edge Christmas lights switch on and this year's celebrations are set to be even bigger and better than previous years.

The annual celebration will take place on Thursday, 22nd November, and, for the first time, London Road will be closed to traffic - so the festivities can spread right down the centre of the village.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Alderley Edge Christmas lights switch on event which is organised by Mitch Gilbert, on behalf of Alderley Edge businesses, as a thank you to those who have supported them during the year.

This year a stage will be located at the junction of West Street and London Road where the crowds will be entertained with live music, including performances from The Ryleys Choir, Alderley District Scout Band and Alderley Edge School for Girls.

Many of the shops will be staying open during the evening whilst bars and restaurants will be offering special Christmas treats, including mince pies, mulled wine and hot chocolate. As usual, a hog roast will also be available.

Father Christmas will be making an appearance on his sleigh and there will be some fairground rides as well as a 'Kids With Us Bus' for the children to explore.

The lights will be switched on by a surprise celebrity guest. They will be assisted by the two winners of the school's poster competition: Digby Lloyd, age 10 from Alderley Edge Primary School, and Julianna Parker from Year 6 at Alderley Edge School for Girls.

The Alderley Edge Christmas lights switch on will take place from 6.00pm to 7.30pm but, new for this year, Canalside Radio will continue to provide entertainment until approximately 9.30pm.

Organiser Mitch Gilbert, of Rainbow Balloons, said "Please enjoy yourselves at this 10th anniversary event. Thank you very much for shopping in Alderley Edge in 2012 and please continue to shop in Alderley Edge, we do appreciate it."

London Road will be closed to traffic between 4pm and 10pm on Thursday, 22nd November, from the junction with Macclesfield Road to the entrance to The Parade car park, which will remain open during the evening.
