Aliens cause a stir in Alderley

Image 6

Mini aliens landed at the Aldeli on Sunday, 11th November, and created quite a stir.

They were not here to take over the village or steal resident's underpants, as they do in my children's story books, but to take part in a music video.

'Go Tell the Eskimo', an up and coming four piece indie pop band, came all the way from London to use Aldeli as a backdrop for their music video prior to going on tour.

The former car showroom was chosen for its resemblance to a flying saucer, which they considered perfect for an alien invasion.

Around 40 local children volunteered to help with the project by dressing up as aliens. The production team provided glittery costumes and spacemen's helmets which the 'aliens' were able to take home as a memento.

After the shooting the band, who have just released their debut EP Smoke Signals, treated everyone to food and drink as a token of their gratitude.

However, the noise from the recording of the video caused problems for local residents and resulted in a number of complaints.

Speaking at Monday's Parish Council meeting, Cllr Mary Maczkowiak said "After a very busy day I started getting phone calls from about 7.15 from very angry, concerned residents on Lynton Lane. They were absolutely stewing, they couldn't hear their televisions, they couldn't hear because of the noise that was coming from Aldeli so I said to them phone the police.

"They were obviously in breach of their licence to have outside music. They phoned the police, the police weren't interested, told the residents to phone environmental health.

"We've got a situation here and I've checked the licence, they are definitely in breach of the licence because I went down and videoed it on my phone. There was loud music, there was a loud speaker, there were children shouting, there was smoke, there was noise and drinks being served outside. They were in breach of their licence."

Cllr Joseph Bergin added "I went past as well, there was a rock band and pyrotechnics and clouds of smoke going across London Road - very strange."

Cllr Frank Keegan said "Licensing have it now registered as a complaint and licensing enforcement will be out there discussing it in the next few days. I have been in touch with them today."

He added "Also planning enforcement are coming out in the next few days to discuss what happened."

Stephen Higham told alderleyedge.com "We're sorry if we caused a disturbance. We did not understand that we were in breach of our licence, if so we apologise to the relevant authorities.

"We were contacted by the band who had seen details of our building in the press. We did not receive any fees from the band and they were collecting for a cancer charity. The band played parts of only one track which in its entirety was not longer than 3 minutes. The band played in the front car park facing the A34 which was furthest away from residences on Lynton Lane.

"In total the length of time the music played was approximately one hour. Music stopped at just after 8.00pm. They needed to film in the dark to highlight the 'flying saucer' effect of the round building lit from below. Approximately 40 local children took part and had a fantastic time. Was there really any harm done?"

for pitys sake someone wants to come to Alderley edge to film a video and all we see is whinging off residents and councillors . music until 8pm doesnt sound too anti social to me, having tolerated fireworks for the last month at all hours of day and night.at least this was for something a bit more creative and it sounds like some of the youngsters had fun .

It's a pity that some of the residents of Lynton Lane apparently so engrossed in their televisions to not realise that there is actually real life going on around them! Well done Aldeli!!

I agree with Mike, 7 - 8pm isn't late at all.
I live close by and I wasn't bothered by this at al. I've also witnessed much more noise pollution from 'Private' house parties in Alderley over the years, which always go unchalleneged.
It was nice to see something interesting happening in Alderley for once, good on you Aldeli for doing something different and quit moaning everyone else, you can watch Strictly come dancing or Take me out on catch up.

Well said Mike. Moan moan moan and all for one hour of disturbance. They should have joined in the fun instead of moaning. Petty lot.

why does this site allow abusive posts, examples above? The facts are that Aldeli is subject to Licencing Restrictions and Planning conditions. If there is a breach, the neighbouring properties are entitled to complain about the breaches. How many of the abusive posts above are from people who had stalls at the Aldeli Farmers Market?
Dave Clarke
Tuesday 13th November 2012 at 8:48 pm
I haven't had a stall at Aldeli Farmers market, my post isn't abusive, not sure which one is Frank - do the other posters want to declare whether they have had stalls at Aldeli and hence your implication of prejudice?
Martin Reeves
Tuesday 13th November 2012 at 8:54 pm
Frank, which posts do you consider abusive?

All I see is a number of people expressing their personal opinion - you do believe in freedom of speech don't you Frank?

Do I personally think coming down on Aldeli with planning/licensing conditions for what was quite obviously a one off extraordinary event is ridiculous?

Yes I do, especially considering it would appear many local children enjoyed it and it was finished just after 8pm.

For the record I have never had a stall at the farmers market.

I think the concept of 'fun' is beyond Frank - far too long as a jobsworth.....

Shame the Hyacinth Bucket brigade can't resist rattling their pearls at the window pane at a joyous party of kids having a hoot. It's my belief that the band who were shooting their video are donating funds to charity. Regardless, my daughter was thrilled to part of this once-in-a- lifetime event and loved every second. As for the noise, it was no louder than a super car revving up at Panacea. Special thanks to everyone at Aldeli for their wonderful hospitality.

No farmers market stall run by me either and none of the posts are abusive in any way.....truthful maybe but not abusive.

In response to Cllr Keegan's post, the only offensive message I can see here is his, with its snide and prejudicial reference to those who sell at the Farmers Market (and no, I don't). I attended the PC meeting on Monday when this subject was raised. Councillors complained at length about lack of action by the police and environmental health to resolve the matter. I waited in vain for one of them to suggest the obvious solution - talking to Aldeli itself to get the full story before rushing to judgement.

Yes Cllr Keegan we have a stall at the Alderley Edge Farmers Market, and we have had for the last seven years or so, irrespective of its venue.

What has that go to do with this issue? You've lost me.

sigh,
I haven't got a stall at the market and I am not a farmer.
It is possible for someone to be supportive without having a vested interest.

I would like to add my voice to those who think that the only abusive post here is that of Cllr. Keegan.

Whilst I wasn't personally affected by the event at Aldeli, like everyone else I have been subjected to fireworks over an extended period and which continued much, much later into the evening and which I consider to be far more disruptive and problematic than this one-off event.

And no, I have nothing to do with the Farmers' Market other than being an occasional customer...

I find it rather sad to think this video had to be done on a Sunday and particularly as it was Remembrance Sunday (I know I am a little old fashioned in this respect but I am sure others would agree with me). As the Aldeli have a licence to do and not to do certain things, this should be adhered to and be understood. Rules are rules, or do people not understand this. When I was in the Services, if I was one minute late after 23.59 on a late night pass, I would be put on a charge. Councillor Maczkowiak was, obviously, contacted by a number of residents complaining about the noise and she did her rightful duty and tried to attend to the matter. If she had ignored the situation, she would then have been accused of not doing her duty. A good proportion of the residents in Lynton Lane are elderly and one person I know has rather a struggle to walk, so perhaps the television is her enjoyment, and elderly people are not too keen to come out at night. As another person commented, "It was nice to see something interesting happening in Alderley for once." It you care to seek it out, there is quite a lot that goes on in the village. We had a Village Dance for the Royal British Legion the other Saturday night and fun was to be had from aged 9 to 90 and we raised £500 and we did not disturb surrounding neighbours. Sadly, not many people supported it from the village but outsiders came and supported it. In the next few weeks, there is plenty going on at the Methodist Chapel. There are activities every week for young and old, a number of which I am a volunteer. As for another comment about Councillor Keegan being beyond fun, I attended a Charity Quiz the other Saturday night, which was also attended by Councillor Keegan and his wife, and we all had a fun time and helped to raise funds for the charity as well. Councillor Maczkowiak and I have lived in Alderley all our lives and we feel passionate about the village but get disheartened sometimes when we see what is happening.

My only whinge is that I missed out on the fun. Why weren't the 'elderlies of Elderley Edge' invited to dress up as aliens?

P.S. Having just read the 'May Fair' discussion at Monday's Parish Council
meeting, lets hope that any future visiting aliens will take some of the
councillors back with them !!

Rules are rules re illegal seating at restaurants in the village Diana but nothing to date has ever been done by those in charge. My family all attended the Rememberance Day parade which took place many hours before this event, you can still have respect for this event and then enjoy the rest of the day.

And as for residents ringing the environmental health............goodness me I hope no-one did. It was an hour of noise and it was all over at 8pm. Hardly a reason to ring them.

As a member of Go Tell The Eskimo, I would like to express my deepest apologies for anyone that we have upset during the recording of this music video. We have the utmost respect for the residents and community of Alderley Edge and would never have intentionally caused a disruption of this sort.

During our planning process, we clearly overlooked the proximity of, and impact on, the local residents and memorial activities in the region. For this we are deeply sorry.

There is a silver lining here as the goal of this event was to raise money for Cancer Research UK (a cause that has personally effected members of our band, and volentary crew, within the last year). That effort will continue to develop as fan donations pour in to watch this video come to life.

We appreciate all the amazing families and friends we've met in the process. Our experience of Alderley has been wonderful and we hope the community can pull together to settle any differences in an amicable and respectful way. With any luck, we can return balance to a little part of the world we've come to love.

Much Respect, Appreciation and Sincerity,
Mike Norbury

Welcome to Alderley Edge Robb and your fellow eskimos.
We're not all party poopers and what you did looked like a load of fun and for a most noteworthy cause .

I suppose a gig in the park at the May Fair would be too far out of the parish council's comfort zone :-)
best of luck for the future

As a trader for 18 years in the village (but no, we don't have a stall at the Farmers Market - well done with that by the way, we've seen an increase in trade since it gained a more prominent position in Aldeli) we would like to put a word in. It's very difficult being an independent trader, the work never stops, hence why this is being written now. We never stop thinking about ways to boost trade, yes for ourselves, but surely this can only increase visitors to the village. Sometimes it feels like we can't do right for doing wrong.

I was at the farmer's market on Sunday, collecting money for Guide Dogs. I was delighted that all the stallholder's and public stopped trading at 11:00. The rememberance service from our wonderful BBC was on the television and the sound was put through the P.A. System. BRILLIANT IDEA!!! Very moving-well done to the Highams.
Normal trading then resumed, actually lots of people came from the war memorial.
During the evening, I was driving past Aldeli when the Aliens had landed and everyone was having loads of fun and didn't seem to me to be causing much trouble.

Maybe Mr. Keegan would be better sorting the 22 cars and vans parked on the pavement of Macclesfield Road yesterday causing it to be a one way street, or the complete breach of planning regulations by shop keepers on London Road as regards disabled access.

I was not at the parish council meeting last week, but it does strike me that Mr Keegan's comments are not really to do with the farmers market.

Thank you so much Christine for organising the Farmer's market, coming each month with my Guide Dog puppies has not only raised a lot of money, but been excellent training for them. Keep up the great work with the market and May Fair. Mr Keegan and his fellow councillors (and elderly neighbours) would do well to follow your public spirit.

I am embarrassed that one of our elected representatives, having had it explained to him that the "noise" lasted for one hour, ended at 8pm, provided enjoyment for a large number of local children and generated funds for Cancer Research, still cannot excercise any sense of balance.

Both Stephen Higham for Al-deli and Robb Harvey for "Go Tell The Eskimos" have apologised for doing something interesting in Alderley Edge.

Perhaps the councillor might again reflect upon the circumstances and provide a more appropriate response.

Well done Robb and thanks for bringing some fun and entertainment to the village whilst raising money for a fantastic cause!
Frank, hopefully you have learnt from this thread that if you haven't got anything nice to say then don't say anything at all!
Lets celebrate our community and not use this forum as a means on constant whining!!
It's great to see so many people supporting you Robb.

I think the swell of public opinion is pretty evident from this thread. Yet again we find Cllr Keegan fighting a battle that is not supported by the wider local community, just like his proposed tarmac-ing of the the allotments. And if he senses criticism he lashes out with completely unfounded allegations of 'abuse'! No one has been abusive, Frank. They just don't understand why the Parish Council sees fit to work themselves into a lather over a one-off incident, that many enjoyed, and which raised funds for a worthy charity, when there are so many other issues which would benefit from their collective efforts and energies. See the points above. Illegal parking is the most obvious one. (And, before you suggest it, we all know tarmacing the allotments is not going to resolve the Congleton Road and Macclesfield Road parking problems!)

I find it hard to believe that what lasted for such a short space of time and was a "one-off" has caused so much fuss. Well done Aldeli for offering your premises so that a band could film a video and raise money for a very worthwhile cause. Robb - thanks you to you and Go tell the Eskimo for choosing our village. (Currently listening to Silverhorse Rider as I type this.) There is more noise coming from the "music" being played for the Zumba class EVERY week in the Scout Hut, and no-one seems to have complained about that. I hear it when walking my dog, (and yes I DO pick up after her) and am so glad that I do not live within earshot.

It might be interesting to know exactly how many people complained?
I am told that the C.E. licensing people subsequently turned up at AlDeli and after a friendly conversation accepted that no licensing rules had been broken.
Enjoy the xmas 'lights on' evening; congrats to the Traders for organising it!

Duncan,
If you read the report above you may find that your PC chums will be able to provide more information on the number of complainants. Mary's phone was ringing off the hook with "stewing" residents of Lynton Lane unable to hear X-Factor (or whatever.)

She says that there were definitely breaches of licensing regulations - she has evidence on her mobile phone.

This in contradiction to what the CE Licensing bods found after their friendly chat.

I demand an enquiry! (only joking)

Hi Alan... I live on Horseshoe Lane, just down from the Aldeli... not a sound disturbed me (deaf old ***?). It was a shame that people did get disturbed of course, but wasn't it all in a good cause? No one on Lynton Lane has mentioned it to me.
Oh well,
