Art gallery closes

An art gallery has closed its doors just over a year after opening in the village.

Collect Art, which opened at 36 London Road in September 2011, was owned by Martin Heaps from Stockton Heath. The gallery specialised in 20th century and contemporary art, by both deceased and living artists, many of whom were from the North West including LS Lowry and Geoffrey Key.

Martin told me "The gallery in Alderley had been quiet at the early stages even though I had done so many events last year. We even brought shows that were meant for Lymm up here to boost the profile - the bottom line was lack of footfall in the gallery, some days zero! We extended the opening hours but this made no difference.

"True what people say in the village, a lot of traffic but little footfall, we tried to introduce different types of art, which also didn't work.

"I love the village and for me it had great feel and great people but business being business you can't keep something going if you're not pulling any money in the doors."

Collect Art is continuing to trade in Lymm where they opened their first gallery in 2008.

Martin added "I would like to thank all the people that we did deal with and hope they don't forget we haven't gone, we are only 10 minutes down the road in the lovely village of Lymm!"

Really sad to see a business close, especially as it was great to have 2 galleries in the village, but I think it's a shame to be damning about the low footfall in the village - true, the parking makes it difficult but I haven't found a problem.

Really sorry to see you go Martin, it's such a shame to see quality Independent stores close in any village.
