War Memorial repaired at last

Work has finally been carried out to repair and clean up the Alderley Edge War Memorial.

The Parish Council has been asking Cheshire East Council (CEC) to carry out this work for a long time so councillors are pleased that some work has now been carried out.

Workmen spent two days this week relaying loose flag stones, re-pointing part of the stone wall and removing debris.

Cllr Melanie Connor said "We have been pushing for work to be carried out because is a disgrace that CEC do not maintain it in the same way that they maintain Wilmslow and Sandbach for example, the flagstones were dangerous - a tripping hazard - and also unsightly.

"We are really pleased that some works have been at last carried out, and perhaps in the future they will maintain such vitally important reminders of the sacrifices made by residents in the two great wars."

Cllr Duncan Herald added "The Parish Council have been urging CEC, for some time, to carry out repairs to the War Memorial and I am very pleased that this has now been done; Alderley Edge is exactly the sort of place where a War Memorial must never fall into disrepair."

Last year Alderley Edge Parish Council requested that CEC sweep up around the War Memorial and remove the dead flowers ahead of the Remembrance Day parade and service.

However, this didn't appear to happen, so 85-year-old war veteran Brian Percival went down there first thing on Remembrance Sunday and cleaned the memorial himself with a knife, dustpan and brush.

This is good news and rightly so. I do hope the department within CEC responsible for war memorials has now made a BIG diary note to clean up ALL memorials before Remembrance Day each year. I was a resident in Trafford Council area for many years and attended Remembrance Day parades each year. Trafford Council made a supreme effort each year to ensure that all their war memorials were spick and span prior to the remembrance services - their council tax was also lower!!

Even as I write, there is a C.E. chap at the war memorial, with a high pressure hose, turning the stone work from black to honey coloured.
