Picnic table marks a milestone for 'Friends'

Having secured planning permission to convert the bandstand in Alderley Edge Park into a cafe, Friends of the Park decided to mark the occasion by having a picnic bench installed in the park.

They are also looking for volunteers to take the project to the next stage and help raise the money required to make their plans a reality.

The picnic table is sited opposite the children's enclosed play area and is made of 100% recycled plastic with wheelchair access at each either end of the table.

Part of the funding for the bench, which is designed to be tough, vandal resistant, virtually maintenance free and a splinter proof alternative to timber, has come from an anonymous donor.

Susan Holland, of Friends of the Park, said: "After many difficulties and almost three years of trying to bring this wonderful idea to fruition, we were delighted to finally achieve planning permission in March, the installation of the bench is a way of The Friends of the Park marking the end of 'Phase One' of the project."

Cllr Duncan Herald said "It is most kind of the Friends of the Park to provide this equipment. Public-spiritedness is alive and well in Alderley Edge."

Susan added "More 'Friends' are now needed to come on board and help raise the monies needed to build the cafe. The design is simple and costs could be kept relatively low. Young families will be the main users of the cafe and it would be good to think that mums and dads in particularly would come forward and help; we need people with energy and enthusiasm!"

Susan Holland has already made contact with some local businesses who have expressed an interest in helping with the project. Unfortunately, Susan and Kriss Coombes, Friends of the Park Treasurer, now have commitments elsewhere and are unable to help with this. If Phase Two is to happen new members are needed to coordinate this.

If you are interested in joining Friends of the Park or require further information please email Kriss Coombes.

Attempts (mainly failed) have already been made to set fire to it and to hack a bit from it: it is sad that the brain-damaged, retarded ****s try to spoil things.

We too have spotted the attempted fire burns marks on the bench when we were walking the dogs yesterday. We are disgusted with such act of vandalism. Even my 6 years old son commented that he don't understand how someone can be so stupid. Sad that we have some inconsiderate people living amongst us.
