The Olympic Torch Relay arrived at Jodrell Bank Observatory today and scaled the magnificent Lovell Telescope.

The Relay, which is visiting around 95% of the UK over 70 days, arrived at the Observatory this morning and the Torch was carried into the 250ft dish of the telescope by comedian John Bishop.

Despite the rain, local schoolchildren and invited guests gathered on site to cheer the Liverpudlian star as he held up the Torch at the very top of the Lovell Telescope.

Because of heightened security for the arrival of the Torch, the event was not open to the public and nearby roads were closed.
