Cheshire East Council has announced that it will suspend all car parking charges for two days in celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

All the Council's car parks across the whole Borough will be free for users over the extended bank holiday, from 8am on Monday June 4th, to 8am on Wednesday June 6th.

Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: "Cheshire East Council has taken this decision to ensure that party-goers can concentrate on enjoying themselves for the whole celebration, rather than worrying about if their ticket has expired.

"We want people to enjoy themselves as much as possible during this once-in-a-lifetime experience."

If Cheshire East really wanted to do something generous they could scrap parking charges for all public holidays, as many other councils do. I may be wrong, but I suspect that there are no parking wardens on duty on public holidays anyway. It would also help if car park notices were explicit as to whether parking is chargeable on public holidays, since I have often seen people reading the notices and scratching their heads before taking pot luck as to whether they need to buy a ticket, even on Christmas Day.

..... Are they funding the free parking out of he money they are getting from the National Grid for allowing them to close the bypass?
