Year 2 pupils from Alderley Edge School for Girls spent a day at St Helen's based World of Glass as part of their Science studies last week.

The girls spent time looking at the properties of glass which tied in with their Science lessons on the 'Grouping and Changing of Materials'.

The girls were told about the difficult conditions that glass workers were subjected to in bygone times - which included children as young as 11 years old who had to collect broken glass from the underground tunnels, which the girls got to explore wearing their hard hats.

It was a day of learning and fun which included activities ranging from visiting the Victorian Glass factory and watching a glass blowing demonstration.

Mrs Duffy, class teacher commented, "The girls really enjoyed learning about the history of St Helens and hearing about local families that used to bathe in the Sankey canal due to the temperature it reached from the hot water pumping out of the glass factory. The day demonstrated to the girls how important glass was in the past and continues to be to our world today."
