Scouts mark centenary with district hike

Bounds2a

A traditional 'beating the bounds' ceremony took place in Alderley Scout District on Sunday to help mark its centenary celebrations.

The challenge was to walk the District Flags from Handforth in the north and Holmes Chapel in the South to Alderley Edge where Scouting first started in the area.

Beating the bounds is an ancient custom where the boundaries of, usually, a church parish would be walked to share information as to where those boundaries actually lay – this in the days before accurate maps were kept.

On this occasion Alderley District members from Handforth, Wilmslow, Lindow, Alderley Edge, Chelford, Goostrey and Holmes Chapel took part with ages ranging from six to seventy.

Members from The District Scout Band played at the start of both legs and then gave a display at the end of the journey.

District Commissioner, Stephen Buckley said "It was a not a typical Cheshire day as it was fine with no rain but the kids still found the mud. Boots had to be removed before the parents took their kids home for a well earned Sunday lunch."

The centenary celebrations will end in September with a Sunset camp.
