Alderley Edge Library re-opened today having undergone a refurbishment.

The library has been closed for two weeks to allow general improvements to made and to put in new technology.

The counter has been replaced with a much smaller one and a self-service machine has been installed, to give users the option of issuing, returning and renewing items by themselves. The layout has also been changed, as a result the library is more spacious with more seating areas and browsing spaces.

The computers have been moved to a quieter space at the back of the library, a seating area has been located at the front and the children's area has been increased.

Community Library Manager Helen Perry said "We have taken away the old counter service but we haven't taken away the staff. We are just providing different opportunities for the staff to engage with customers in a more interactive way.

"We have opened up the space hugely. It is lighter and airier and so far this morning the feedback has been positive and encouraging."

A service point desk has also been added in preparation for when the library starts offering help to people with information about Cheshire East Council services. In the future local residents will be able to purchase concessionary rail cards, obtain bus passes and bring in benefits forms which library staff will scan through to the benefits office in Macclesfield.

Helen Perry explained "The idea is that staff will be able to handle any enquiry regarding Cheshire East Council services and provide general information about the work of the Authority. Wilmslow Library has been offering this service since May 2010 and it is being rolled out across all libraries in Cheshire East."

Councillor David Brown, Cabinet member with responsibility for performance and capacity, said: "We want our libraries to be modern, comfortable and functional places for all our residents. This means having up-to-date facilities which provide a number of services, not just borrowing books.
