Cars hit by rocks thrown from bypass bridge

A motorist had a lucky escape after a rock was thrown from a bridge on the A34 bypass last night.

A man was travelling along the A34 Alderley Edge bypass in the direction of Monks Heath on Saturday, 18th February, at around 11.30pm when a boulder was dropped onto his vehicle from the bridge at Welsh Row.

The rock, which appears to have been removed from outside a property on Welsh Row, caused considerable damage to the front of the vehicle but fortunately the driver was not hurt.

Police were called fifteen minutes after the incident occurred, they searched the area but were unable to locate any offenders.

PC Lauren Thatcher, who attended the incident, said "We are hoping that this was an isolated incident but we are asking people to report anyone acting suspiciously on any of the bridges.

"This was a completely reckless and idiotic act and the outcome could have been a lot worse."

Anyone with information should contact Cheshire Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Updated 12.15am on Monday 20th February: Shortly after publishing this article we were informed that police officers had just attended another similar incident.

The second vehicle had also been travelling on the A34 Alderley Edge bypass towards Monks Heath, unfortunately the male driver did not see the large rock in the carriageway, just after the Welsh Row bridge, in time. He hit the rock which has damaged the underneath of the vehicle.
