Residents parking schemes on the way

Residents' parking schemes are set to be introduced on selected streets in Alderley Edge.

The schemes, designed to help residents park close to their homes by limiting long term parking for non-residents, will be implemented shortly on a number of village streets, including Carlisle Street, Clifton Street and Lydiat Lane.

Residents have been pushing for residents' parking permits for some time, to put an end to "the blight of all day and in some cases all night and holiday parking" which has caused them huge problems.

Mike Taylorson, from Carlisle Street, and Michael Chapman, from Clifton Street, submitted a detailed proposal to the Parish Council, on behalf of residents, in November 2009 for the introduction of residents' parking following several meetings with representatives from the Parish Plan and Parish Council.

In response to the proposal, Alderley Edge Parish Council expressed their concerns that the introduction of residents' parking schemes would result in displacement, moving the problem of all day commuter parking elsewhere in the village, and felt that the consultation should be as wide as possible.

Cheshire East Council (CEC) held a public consultation at Alderley Edge Cricket Club in October, for those residents affected, which was described as "a big success, providing an opportunity for people to ask any final questions before the vote".

Voting forms were then sent to residents of Thurston Green, South Terrace, Carlisle Street, Clifton Street, Lydiat Lane and a section of Chorley Hall Lane in November, asking for their views on the introduction of residents' parking permits. 82% of respondents were in favour of these streets having a residents parking scheme.

CEC have confirmed that the design of the residents' parking schemes is almost complete and that Traffic Regulation Orders will be issued shortly.

Cheshire East Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: "The review is now complete and was well received by residents. Successful meetings were held with local residents groups and interested parties and these highlighting the need for residents' parking schemes in specific areas of Alderley Edge.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to this review process. We are now at an advanced stage in designing the proposed parking schemes. Firm dates for implementation will be available after further necessary statutory stages have been completed enabling us to issue the Traffic Regulation Orders. We will aim to update residents as soon as this process is complete."

Residents' parking schemes are only one element of the much discussed and anticipated parking review which was completed in the village last summer by CEC.

The parking review was carried out to look at parking management and control in the village centre in terms of both on and off street parking. Cheshire East planned to study existing parking in the village centre to identify whether any changes are needed to improve the provision, control and management of parking for local residents, businesses and their customers.

The review was to cover all car parks and on street controls, as well as proposed residents' parking schemes and parking areas which are not currently within a Car Park Order but are affected by parking demand in the centre. A projection as to future demand trends is also to be included along with recommendations for changes and improvements.

We hope to receive further information from CEC about the Alderley Edge parking review in the near future.
