The new trophy cabinet at Alderley Edge Cricket Club at Moss Lane is filling up nicely thanks to the hockey section winning two more prestigious awards - the Cheshire Sports Club of the Year 2011 and a special Sports Enterprise award.

Sport Cheshire hosted the 9th annual Cheshire & Warrington Sports Partnership Awards event, on Wednesday 16th November at Eaton Park, by kind permission of the Duke and Duchess of Westminster.

The evening was a celebration of those who go the extra mile for community sport across Cheshire and Warrington. Over 150 guests, including Teresa Hadfield, Ghis Barrie and Kelvin Briggs from the hockey club heard first hand the contribution a wide range of individuals and organisations make to ensuring sport continues to prosper across the Partnership.

The evening included a champagne and canapés reception, fitting for the prestigious location and Alderley Edge’s fantastic achievement.

The Sports Enterprise award is awarded to a club or sports organisation that has shown a level of enterprising activity that has impacted on the community and its members. The new hockey section pitch project with its innovative fund raising activities and gaining of grants was highlighted by the judges as ‘quite a magnificent effort’.

The submission for the categories focused on the activities undertaken by the club to secure the £520,000 to build the pitch facility at the Ryleys playing field in the village.

The club secured grants from the National Hockey Foundation for £62,500 and £50,000 from the Alderley Edge Institute Trust. The club members raised £100,000 through innovative fundraisings including a 12 hour hockeython, raffle for a car, major dinner and auction, online sale of squares of the pitch and personal donations from ex members following a major fundraising campaign.

The Club also constructed a 15 year business plan to gain a 15 year bank loan from the Co-Op Bank for £300,000.
