Oli Webb switches on Alderley's Christmas lights

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Alderley Edge as the festive lights were switched on in the village this evening.

Hundreds of people wrapped up warm and headed to The Parade to see racing driver Oli Webb switch on the Christmas lights to mark the start of the festive season.

The 20 year-old driver from Knutsford, who recently took third in the British Formula 3 International Series, arrived in a Shelby Mustang GT500.

The crowds were entertained with performances from Alderley Edge School for Girls and Alderley District Scout Band. Canalside Radio provided all the announcements and thanks to Wilmslow Round Table, Father Christmas made a popular appearance, arriving on his sleigh to hand out sweets to the excited children.

Rev Jane Parry, from St Philip and St James' Church, welcomed everyone to the annual light switch on and thanked those local businesses who had funded this evening and provided sponsorship in the form of free food, drinks, gifts and assistance.

Oli Webb was joined on stage by the two winners of this year's poster competition: Amaya Gavin from Alderley Edge Community Primary School and Julianna Parker from Alderley Edge School for Girls, who were presented with prizes by Mitch Gilbert of Rainbow Balloons, and Chairman of Alderley Action Group.

Mitch organised the event along with Heidi from Cutting Edge Salon on behalf of Alderley Edge traders and businesses as a thank you to those who have supported them during the year.

Businesses who helped with this evening's event include Grill on the Edge, The Potting Shed, The Bubble Room, Deli-Ice, The Alderley Edge Hotel, Weinholts, Bluemantle, Panacea, Rainbow Balloons and The Potting Shed.
