Alderley Edge Community Primary School has always had a strong sporting ethos, having enjoyed much success in rounders, tag rugby, netball and football tournaments.

Now, thanks to links with Alderley Edge Hockey Club, it may not be long before they are participating and doing just as well in hockey competitions.

The school have developed a close working relationship with England Hockey Board's 'Club of the Season'. The Year 5 and 6 children at the village school are learning and developing the basic skills of hockey with Kelvin Briggs, one of the coaches at the Alderley Edge club.

Regular weekly coaching is teaching children the basic skills and encouraging them to continue their participation with the local club by attending the Sunday morning sessions held at Wilmslow High School.

Kelvin commented "We are a 'Clubs First' accredited club committed to developing hockey in our local community. Linking up with the school broadens the children's sporting education and signposts them into our club - it's a great win win. The children are a pleasure to coach and a credit to their teachers."

Headteacher Chris Perry, who values the school club link, said "The children are learning a new sport and having a lot of fun. Kelvin is an excellent coach and the children have already learnt the basics of the game.

"It is great to hear that a good number of the children are going along to the Sunday morning sessions at Wilmslow High where they have the opportunity to continue their learning and make new friends."

Alderley Edge Hockey Club's new artificial grass pitch, called The Edge hockey centre, is currently being built on the Ryleys playing field and is set to open in late October.
