Parish requests upkeep of park and memorial

Alderley Edge Parish Council agreed at last night's meeting to request that Cheshire East Council make a number of improvements to Alderley Edge Park and the War Memorial.

The Parish Council considered a report put together by councillors Duncan Herald, Mel Connor and Sue Joseph along with Kriss Coombes from Friends of the Park.

It was agreed that they would move forward with these suggestions rather than wait for the report from Ben Hamilton-Baillie, whose company Hamilton-Baillie Associates has been engaged by Cheshire East Council to prepare a preliminary report for redeveloping the village centre - with the intention of presenting this at a public meeting in November.

Parish Councillors are proposing that a gate is installed at the park where there is currently a gap in the hedge on Ryleys Lane, opposite the memorial.

Cllr Herald explained "This proposal creates a formal entrance and exit point to the park which improves the safety issue of children potentially running directly from the park onto Ryleys Lane.

"We favour a metal gate as being longer lasting, having higher visibility levels, more vandal proof and in keeping with the metal fencing already around the park."

Other requests include extending the black metal railings around the park to meet the proposed new gate, removing the concrete posts and hedges, and the Japanese Knotweed which has invaded this area.

The Parish Council is also proposing that the vegetation surrounding the steps down from London Road into the park be cut back and a new metal handrail is installed, preferably on both sides of the steps.

Cllr Mel Connor said "We're talking about the general upkeep of the park. In 2005 we were promised metal railings on both sides of the steps down to the park, we have waited long enough.

"We need to push Cheshire East Council to take a look at the park and do some work there."

When considering winter use of the path, the Parish Council is also requesting the installation of a salt reservoir at the top of the steps for safety purposes.

The Parish Council will also be writing to Cheshire East to point out the "deficiencies" and "general tatty condition" of the War Memorial.

Cllr Sue Joseph said "Various things need doing before somebody has a nasty accident on the flagstones and sues, and before it falls apart. The service is slippery and it's uneven."

Cllr Mary Maczkowiak added "We must remind Cheshire East that Remembrance Sunday is coming up."

Cllr Mike Williamson agreed to request that somebody from Cheshire East comes down to have a look at the memorial and ascertain what works need doing.

Most of the flower beds in the Park are in a neglected and overgrown condition. If it is too much to keep them in an attractive manner I should like to suggest they be dug-up and returned to grass as the grass areas are nicely kept.
