Recycling roadshows come to Alderley

Mascotbin1-1

Brand new bins are currently being delivered as the area gears up for the introduction of the Think Silver, Think Recycling scheme on October 3rd.

As part of the Council's new initiative, designed to give residents a simpler, more convenient three-bin system, roadshows have been organised in the area. These will offer people the chance to find out more information or get any help they might need.

The emphasis of Think Silver, Think Recycling is on the silver (grey) bin, which will be used to collect all dry recyclables, including mixed plastics, glass, cans, aerosols, paper, cardboard, cartons and foil. These bins are being delivered to households in Alderley Edge and surrounding areas in time for the start of the service.

The scheme was launched in May for residents in the southern area who are using the scheme successfully.

Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: "These roadshows were successful in helping our residents in the southern part of Cheshire East to raise any issues, ask questions and seek advice.

"Now, I hope all those in the northern region of Cheshire East who would like to find out more will take advantage of these events."

The scheme means there is no more juggling around with bags and boxes because recycling is all sorted in one. All dry recyclable materials will go into one bin, with only one collection day to remember.

Since it was introduced in the south of Cheshire East in May, the area's 'dry recycling' has increased by an impressive 400 tonnes a month. If this is repeated in the north then Cheshire East's 50 per cent total recycling rate will increase by five per cent by 2012.

Events will be held in Alderley Edge on Thursday September 29th and Tuesday October 11th, they will take place outside Co-op and Waitrose from 9am until 4pm.

Has everyone in Alderley Edge received a silver bin? Has everyone on Brook Lane received a silver bin - apart from me, of course 'cos I haven't received mine for a service which starts on 3rd Oct.

Thank you for the clarification that the photo is Phil the Bin.

Hopefully you have your silver bin now Frank. You could always call the Waste and Recycling contact line like I did, but they told me that they don't handle complaints, which should be directed to my local councillor! :-) Of course our black bin is already full to overflowing, including recycleable material which had no other home until we received our silver bin. Our black bin was last collected on September 19th, so it will be pretty smelly by the next time it is collected on October 13th, especially after the unseasonal hot weather. I think that somebody should explain to the Waste and Recycling department that councillors are responsible for policy, but that the department is responsible for implementation. In my view they have screwed up on what should have been a simple changeover. All they had to do was get the silver bins out on time and collect the black bins this week rather than next week.

Alan,

I thought your black bin will be collected on w/c 3rd which is 6th, if you are a Thursday collection. I am moving to a Friday collection - so my black bin which was originally for collection tomorrow will now be Friday 7th. My green bin will be Friday 14th and the silver bin will also be Friday 14th - I am guessing that it will have been delivered before 14th, but maybe I am just an optimist.

I don't get it. The silver bin now has to hold everything that was in the box for bottles and cans, the paper that was previously in the sacks, and just about everything else apart from food waste. Meanwhile the black bin takes the food waste - and it'll be alot of waste to fill that! On top of which if I don't move the black bin into my kitchen (how attractive) it means another bin in the kitchen to separate the food from everything else. Does anyone have a solution?

How much money has Cheshire East spent on this!!! Front page on the local paper! 2 lots of leaflets posted out! Roadshows around the area! How much more info do you need!!!! Yet driving around yesturday and today how many people around Alderley and Wilmslow have put their bins out!!! Too many!!! What a waste of time and money by the council because people just can't take a few mins to read what they need to know!!! Dig out the leaflets that you've put in your bin and READ them!!!

The contents of the black bins go to landfill, the object is to reduce what goes to landfill and recycle as much as possible... I am very glad to have the silver bin as it saves petrol driving to recycling centres! My only issue is that my silver bin is already over half full and is not being collected till a week on Friday. Personally I'd like the silver bin emptied every week and the black and green bins every other week (perhaps thereby discouraging the easy option of just dumping stuff in landfill?) I agree with Karen that if folk just read what they were sent (or look it up on the Cheshire East website) then expenditure could be slashed - but sadly they don't, or won't!

MAFEKING HERE!

Silver bin now delivered. Leaflet with bin said I would receive a calendar in post; does anyone have a calender?

How do you write on the slippery labels to mark your house name/number. I use marker pens but they just rub off.

I got a calendar in the post a couple of weeks ago Frank - but if yours has gone AWOL, you can enter your postcode here and print your own calendar.

(I used ball pen to write on the label and then on top of that used indelible marker and that seems to just about work!)

I think the recycling silver bins are a great idea . My only concern in mine is already full with all the plastic I was waiting to take to the plastic recycling. At long last we dont have to sort everything into different boxes. The amount that can be recycled is great and the roadshows and leaflets and calendar I received have given full and detailed information on how the system will work and what can be put in it so if you read the information you should be in no doubt. At long last the council have done something positive!!!!! They may have the odd teething problem but at least they have now moved with the times on this issue.

We were on holiday and came back to find a silver bin. No calendar or leaflets have been delivered, we have one sticker for the silver bin but none for the black or green bins and tape around the silver bin telling us not to open until 3rd. So today we diligently put our black bins out because we had no idea the day had changed. If people are offended by seeing bins out maybe they should consider it is the result of the poor delivery of communication materials rather than jumping to the conclusion that it is an inability to follow instructions...

Just come round the Hough and all 3 colours are out! It is black bin only this week. The silver bin goes with the green bin which it tells people in the booklet that was with the bin. Ok some people may not have had this but I would of said most have. To say poor delivery of communication of materials isn't right. But as full roads have put all bins out then maybe this should be looked into but I would go with the fact that people havn't been bothed to read what has been posted in most cases!

I didn't receive the promised calendar either. I have it on reasonably good authority (a postman) that quite a high perceptage of Alderley Edge residents have not received calenders. I'm not quite sure why this would be. Surely distributing a calendar is more straight forward that delivering a bin? I will have to do what I've always done, and follow the herd to determine which bin to put out when.

As for criticising residents for not reading information or following the correct instructions, soon enough the 'culprits' will want their bins emptying, so will fall into line. This is no doubt a temporary blip.

Just to reiterate, anyone who hasn't had a calendar and does want to know can find out their collection schedule by entering their postcode here:

Would it be asking too much for the Environmental Resource Operatives (binmen) to actually put the bin back where they found it? Doesn't matter whether it is black, green or silver. Every week my bin gets collected and every week we have to stop the car and move the bin which is across our drive.

What do you do with the old green box?

Recycle it?

Or keep it for all the recycling that will not fit in the silver bin (especially if, like us, you still have not received one!).

Kaz - it's plastic so we have just put it 'inside' the silver bin! So they take it away for recycling!

Is anyone finding they need 'two' silver bins ours is full already and we have another week before it's cleared, we have started putting recycling in the 'almost empty' black wheelie!

Stuart,

Would you like me to order a bin for you? email and ask for a bin! I will email him too and tell him to expect your email. Same goes for anyone else who has not received a silver bin.

Still no silver bins on Chelford Road, just my black and green and bottle box and sack.

Thursday 3rd October saw my black bin emptied and paper and cardboard left in the rain as per all other local neighbours. Nobody came for it all day so I took it back in sodden.
Intersting new tactics by the bin men, left the bin right in the middle of our vehicle access forcing me to remove it to get out. Im told they have changed the crews round. The previous crew left it carefully at the side of the drive. New crew need some customer care advice.

Rang 0300 123 5011 on the leaflet previously left. Nice message asking me what my problem was, nice menu of choices, sadly when you make your choice the number just rings out then loops to a message then back to four rings ete etc. You can't speak to the people running this shambles

Pretty sloppy, no silver bin, left waste at roadside uncollected, and the answer service fails to work. The idea is good but the Cheshire East Council performance is woeful.
Back to their website next to give them feedback and plead nicely for a silver bin.... wondered if other folk have no silver kit yet?

Mr Keegan, For once, I agree with you! Why is it that the bin men appear to deliberately leave the emptied bins directly in front of our acces?? I suspect it is not by mistake....

I have to say that I have never found the binmen who look after us anything but very helpful and willing to assist..
The new silver bins were delivered on time as were the very clear instructions on how to use them and what to do with the boxes/bags which will no longer be needed. The new schedule seems to be working here - black bins were collected last Friday as they should have been...

My silver bin was emptied on schedule on Friday but unfortunately it seems to be damaged already! The bar which is used to hoist up the bin has deep scratches on it which look as if they will split before too long. This bar is thinner on the silver bin than the black and green bins. Is this a design fault or was i just unlucky? Has anybody else noticed any damage to their bin?

Probably not a design fault, just cost less than the black ones !

Most likely made from recycle plastics! Mine has a notch missing from the top lid when it was delivered.

Mailed the Council gent Phil Sherrat suggested by Frank Keegan and hey presto, silver bin arrived next morning. Very smart greyish thing and now full of recyclable rubbish. Then had a phone call from Council to check it had arrived safely. The Keegan effect on local Council Waste services is mighty impressive!
There were no instructions with the bin, but they were sent by first class mail to me on request. with excellent Bin stickers that now allow personalisation of your bin, a neat little place to write your house name.
The old green bottle box deserves a medal for services rendered over the years and will enjoy its retirement now as a potato grow box next spring. Measuring household Pinot Grigio and Peroni intake will now be a private pastime and the neighbours will no longer think we are running a wine bar;)
Well done Cheshire East for restoring service and faith in the end.
