Allotment show is top of the crops

The 70th Alderley Edge Allotments and Garden Society show may have got off to a damp start but this failed to put off the many faithful local residents who went along to enjoy this annual community event.

Whilst both exhibitor numbers and entries were slightly down on last year approximately 200 people attended the show.

The day began as usual with Owen Spence making his solitary 6.45am walk through the village carrying a 12 foot sunflower to adorn the Show entrance, which has become a tradition.

Among the expected winners were Chris Yearsley and Duncan Ward in the flower classes, and Veronica Langton who won the prestigious Gladiolus Cup, for the best gladioli in the Show.

Chris Yearsley completed a double by winning both the overall flower and the fruit and vegetable trophies, but it was a close run thing, as there are now a few young contenders chasing him.

The newcomers trophy went to Tom Gibbons and once again, Jean Vann was very successful, winning the Sally Ann Silver Cup, the MJ Proctor Silver Cup and the Mrs D Midwood Silver Cup for her entries in the domestic crafts section.

Mrs D Carey won the Mr & Mrs C Harden Silver Cup for her crafted floral art display entitled 'The Royal Wedding', Owen Spence regained the heaviest marrow trophy and Louise Mason won the heaviest pumpkin again. Jim Hart was successful in winning the Harry Hardy and the Howard Saunders trophies for his runner Beans and shallots.

The Children's trophies; the Cockshott Cup and the W V Percival Silver Cup went to George Chadwick and Alice Hall whilst the most fiercely contested trophy, the F E Jones Silver Cup for Cookery, was won by Jenny Cockshott.

The Show Secretary, Ian Copeland said "This has been the subject of much rivalry over recent years and already, fellow competitors are understood to be back in the kitchen trialling new recipes."

"For an amazing second year in a row the Show has made a slight profit, mainly due to the kind donations by the local traders for raffle prizes."
