Alderley Edge tops the chart for northern villages with 36 house sales of over £1m recorded in the past four years. Prestbury, the only other northern village in the top 20, is 7th with 32 sales over £1m.

Jean Pilkington, Associate Director at Savills Wilmslow commented: "We've seen a strong start to 2011 in Wilmslow, Prestbury and Alderley Edge for homes between £1million and £2.5million. Additionally there's been a real surge of activity in February and March to beat stamp duty for completion before April.

"We're seeing some indications that the April market will be much improved, with lots of new property entering the market. We're also seeing a lot of properties with land and good gardens coming to market. In terms of buyers, there are offers coming through, however there is still a gap between vendor expectation and what buyers are expecting to pay."
