Post Office says it's business as usual

The premises at 45 London Road were repossessed on Friday by the landlord Allsabrook Developments Directors Pension Fund Limited.

As a result of the repossession, the retail business at the Post Office has ceased trading. However the Post Office counter is unaffected for now and a notice on the window says it "will remain open for the foreseeable future."

We understand that Scott Darlington, who had been running the post office as a franchise, has been trying to sell the leasehold of the business for some time but when I spoke with Meridian Business Sales yesterday they said "We are in the process of removing the business from our database but unsure as to whether the vendor had sold the business privately, or no longer wishes to sell."

Nick Turner, from the Royal Mail Press Office told me "It is business as usual, this has had no impact on service provision which is our main focus.

"We have a temporary postmaster in there and this will continue. We don't own the building and whilst there are a number of issues, from Post Office Ltd's point of view we will maintain a presence in Alderley Edge."

I did ask what is going to happen next given the current situation surely can't continue indefinitely, but the Post Office were not prepared to say anything further at this stage.

I have spoken with a representative of Bluemantle, who own the building, this afternoon, regarding the situation with the Post Office.

She said "Bluemantle are very keen to keep the Post Office open and they are looking for somebody to run the franchise.

"They recognise the importance of the Post Office to the village and are looking for a way to keep it open, it will certainly remain open until after the Christmas period and in to the new year."
