Alderley marks Remembrance Sunday

The Alderley Edge Remembrance Day parade and service took place this afternoon in honour of those who sacrificed their lives fighting for their country.

Organised by the Alderley Edge British Legion the parade included British Legion members, scouts, cubs, beavers, guides, brownies and rainbows. They were joined by representatives from WRVS, St. Pius Church, Alderley Edge Methodist Church, St. Mary's Nether Alderley Church and St. Philip and St. James Church, as well as councillors, police and other local officials.

The parade departed from the Festival Hall at 2.30pm, marching along Moss Lane, Trafford Road and Chapel Road before proceeding down London Road to the war memorial on Ryleys Lane, where prayers and the wreath laying ceremony took place.

This was followed by the Service of Remembrance and an address at St. Philip and St. James church which was led by Rector Revd James Milnes of St. Mary's and accompanied by the joint choirs of St. Mary's and St. Philip and St. James church.

On Saturday, members of the British Legion and local councillors observed a 2 minute silence outside Barclays Bank at 11.00am.

Following another year of heavy British casualties in Afghanistan, the British Legion has sold a record 46 million poppies this year.

I am really pleased this took place my wife and I attended at 11.00am (understandably) and missed the events, probably missed the time announcements along the way but delighted that Alderley Edge honoured the heroes from all conflicts.
