On your marks for the bypass event

With less than 5 days to go until the Alderley Edge and Nether Alderley Bypass Run and Walk over 850 runners are now registered to take part in this unique event.

Demand to run the bypass on Sunday October 24th has far exceeded expectations, and the initial target of 500 runners, which hopefully bodes well for the walk which can accommodate as many people as possible.

Malcolm Fowler, race organiser, said "Postal and online entry for the race will close on Thursday evening so if anybody would still like to take part in the 5 mile run then you need to register as soon as possible.

"Those wanting to walk the bypass can just turn up on the day without any need to pre-register."

As reported last week, a long list of charities and good causes who work in the local area will benefit from the money raised from entry fees for both the run and walk but there is also a whole host of other charities which are being represented on the day.

Charities which have been recruiting supporters to walk, or run, along the new road to raise funds for them include: Arthritis Research, Blue Cross, Amnesty International, Crossroads, East Cheshire Hospice, Francis House, Genesis, Guy Hilton Asthma Trust, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, Marie Curie, MAST, NSPCC, National Eczema.Society, Samaritans, RSPB, UNICEF, Wilmslow United Reformed Church, MNDA, Windway Trust, New Start, Citizens Advice Bureau, Wilmslow Wells and Wythenshawe Hospital.

This is by no means an exhaustive list but it does give an indication of just how many charities are going to benefit from this community event, and if you are taking part and haven't yet collected sponsorship you have plenty of choice when deciding who to support.

Runners should by now have received their race number and final instructions through the post. Any runners with pre-race queries should email Malcolm Fowler or attend the help desk by the start line before 9am on Sunday. Runners need to aim to be parked by 9am at the latest to allow time for them to get to the start.

Entry and sponsorship forms are available from our dedicated page for the A34 Alderley Edge and Nether Alderley bypass run and walk - a link to which can be found in the top right corner of the home page.

Let's hope the weather is kind and thousands of local people take this one off opportunity to run or walk the new road before it opens to traffic next month.

For those taking part in the run, I wish you all the best and if you see me struggling along in my alderleyedge.com t-shirt please shout words of encouragement as I'll probably need them.

We will be publishing a feature as soon as possible after the Bypass Run and Walk, along with a gallery of photos, which will hopefully, weather permitting, include a number of aerial shots.
