Roundabouts favoured for village junctions

By now all local residents, and businesses, should have received a copy of the questionnaire which Alderley Edge Parish Council produced asking for feedback on the initial proposals for road layout improvements at the junctions with Macclesfield Road, Ryleys Lane and Brook Lane. If you have not seen a copy the questionnaire can be downloaded here.

At Monday's Parish Council meeting I learnt that 131 responses have been received so far from the 3500 questionnaires which were distributed to local residents and businesses, which represents a 3.74% response rate.

Councillor Nigel Schofield confirmed that in regard to the junction at Ryleys Lane 42% of responses preferred design one, opting for a single mini roundabout at the junction. 18% preferred the double mini roundabout, whilst 15% have chosen design three which suggested a t-junction at the top of Ryleys Lane. 25% of respondents didn't want any changes made.

In response to the second question about the junction with Macclesfield Road, 60% have selected the single mini roundabout, only 6% preferred a double mini roundabout and 13% chose the staggered junction design.

The third question, relating to the Brook Lane junction, resulted in the biggest majority with 80% opting for the introduction of a roundabout . Only 6% chose the second option whilst 14% requested no change.

Councillor Schofield said "A lot of thought went in to this by a lot of people and I am quite chuffed by the response. It has been very helpful, these are not the final answers but they feed the thoughts process."

In addition to selecting their preferred design local residents also expressed their concerns for the safety of pedestrians, the lowest cost option and waiting to see what happens once the bypass is open.

Alderley Edge Parish Council are still keen to receive more responses. No action will be taken until the bypass is open but they would like to get things moving, so if you don't haven't yet returned the questionnaire it can be downloaded here. Questionnaires need to be returned to the Festival Hall or Alderley Edge Library.

This questionnaire does not seem to have been consistently distributed. I only heard of it this morning (17 September). Residents as far apart as Swiss Hill and Heyes Lane have not received it. There are some important considerations at stake here - some of the suggestions are downright dangerous and do not seem to have been thought through.

For example: all the options for Macclesfield Road compress the huge volume of traffic approaching the junction from the east into a single lane! And if (as it appears) all options prevent a right turn out of Chapel Road onto the new junction, all that traffic will be forced up Trafford Road, already a dangerous bottleneck, with an awkward hill-start onto Macclesfield Road at the top. Asking for trouble. Also the plans for Ryleys Lane do not seem to make allowance for the fact that most M6-bound drivers who know the route (instead of following the signs) will continue to use Ryleys Lane to reach Chelford and Holmes Chapel.
