Sir Bobby Charlton opens charity fete

The david lewis charity summer fair was held on Saturday in their beautiful grounds on Mill Lane and opened by their very special guest Sir Bobby Charlton, who stayed for two hours to sign autographs and pose for photos.

Thankfully, after a pretty wet morning the rain held off so the families could enjoy a fun packed afternoon with something for everyone. Entertainment included learning circus skills, a bouncy castle, face painting, a golf putting challenge and lots of stalls selling everything from jewellery and plants to handmade cards. Amongst the refreshments on offer was home made ice cream from Blaze Farm, a BBQ, beer tent and a tea tent featuring cakes from around the world.

Declaring the fair officially open Sir Bobby Charlton said "This is a very important place. All the money you provide is really important to this tremendous centre.

"I am so glad the rain has stopped and thanks very much for inviting me and my wife."

Michael Watson, one of the residents, then presented Sir Bobby Charlton with a hand made thank you card.

A charity football match also took place during the afternoon which saw the david lewis All Stars challenged by a team from Coronation Street which included actors Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs, and Ryan Thomas who plays Jason Grimshaw.

Helen Archibald, Fundraising Manager at david lewis said "We had a wonderful day. It was great to see so many residents, families and staff enjoying themselves. We made a profit of over £5000 and would like to thank all our volunteers who worked so hard to make it a success."

david lewis is the UK's largest provider of care, education, assessment, treatment and life skills development for people with complex epilepsy, physical and learning difficulties and other neurological conditions.
