Alternative junction layouts proposed

Alderley Edge Parish Council have been in discussions with Cheshire East Council for some time regarding traffic management in the village once the bypass is completed. They are working together to maximise the benefits of the bypass to Alderley Edge and define how the village will look once the bypass is open and the volume of traffic is reduced.

Having identified a range of issues, including signage, weight restrictions, speed limits near schools, bus stop locations and the redesign of the main junctions in the village, the Parish Council have produced a questionnaire which will shortly be delivered to every household in Alderley Edge.

Residents, as well as local businesses, are being asked to consider initial proposals for new road layouts at the London Road junctions with Macclesfield Road, Ryleys Lane and Brook Lane.

Councillor Matthew Lloyd said "The questionnaire allows all residents the opportunity to inform the decisions being made regarding the village by not only indicating a preference for the alternative junction layouts, but also providing any other suggestions or raising concerns."

The questionnaire, which can be downloaded here, is being delivered with the first Alderley Edge Parish Council newsletter which can also be downloaded from alderleyedge.com. Questionnaires need to be returned to the Festival Hall or Alderley Edge Library and once the responses have been collected and analysed the Parish Council will hold another meeting with Cheshire East.

On a separate issue, the eagerly awaited Parish Plan is also at the printers. I have spoken to Nicholas Ridings, Chairman of the Parish Plan Committee, this evening and he expects to have further information and an electronic copy of the Parish Plan for us next week.

Was wondering about why there was no proposal for the Heyes Lane Junction , which to the untrained eye would seem to be the most congested.

The main reason the junction between Heyes Lane and London Road has no proposed changes is due to the lack of space to make many changes. Also, the space outside the bank on the corner has utilities under the pavement which would be very expensive to work around, hence precluding any scheme that encroaches on this space. Additonally, easing the flow of traffic from Heyes Lane on to London Road could further encourage the flow of traffic down Trafford Road.

I hope this answers your question.

It would have been helpful to have had an explanation of the rational behind the options. Each of the proposed changes would seem to increase the likelihood of congestion in the village when the main reason for the bypass is to reduce congestion.

If the purpose of these proposals is to make the route through the village less attractive to motorists then reducing the speed limit and weight restrictions are better options in my opinion. I would also say that considering such proposals seems premature without first evaluating the effect the bypass has on traffic in the village once opened.

Seems like the horse is following the cart. If these options had been considered beforehand, the bypass would hardly be necessary. The majority of traffic congestion is school generated. These changes would have reduced the congestion due to school traffic.

Since London road is no longer a main road, but Ryleys Lane is still a main road from Chelford, would it be better to have a give way from the village on to Ryleys Lane-Wilmslow road?

Brian lot of sense in what you say. I also think each option should include all changes as no doubt some will work better with others etc. The junctions are very close and changes will impact all. The answer re. Heyes Lane is disappointing, it might be difficult to sort but is where the congestion starts.
