Alderley cyclist heads to Paris

Alderley Edge resident Giles Geddes will set off on Sunday from Greenwich on a 320 miles journey to the Champs Elysees in Paris.

Along with two friends, Tobi and Chris, he is cycling from London to Paris in four days in aid of the Alzheimer's Society.

Their families and friends are among the many that have been affected by Alzheimer's, all of them have seen and experienced the terrible impact the disease has on sufferers and their relatives, so they decided to give something back to those who helped their loved ones through difficult those times. All the money raised will go directly to the Alzheimer's Society as they have organised the ride independently and are covering all the costs themselves.

Giles, 36, who has lived in Alderley Edge for 3 years with his wife Laraine, who is expecting their first child in January, said "I cycle most weekends along the lanes and B roads of Cheshire and the peaks. On most rides I'm joined by a couple of friends from Manchester who pedal out of the smoke for some country air.

"On one of those rides back in March my friend Greg Blaise got talking about the death of his father from Alzheimers. It transpired that my other two friends, Chris and Tobi had also had family members with dementia. We pretty much decided there and then that we wanted to do the ride and by the time we had got home we had a basic plan to pitch to the cycling WAGS.

"After some investigation on the web we realised there were a wide variety of London to Paris rides organised by third party companies but in order to ensure all monies went to the Alzheimers Society we decided to organise the ride ourselves."

Having done nothing like this before and no training, other than his normal weekend rides, Giles said "I fully expect to find this a real challenge. It goes way beyond my cycling ability. I'm always a little sceptical of charity events which are essentially a jolly."

"We hope to raise a decent amount for a very worthwhile cause so please sponsor us - all donations small and large will be gratefully received."
