Join the Blooming Great Tea Party

Today is the start of the official tea party season when every year thousands of people put the kettle on and hold tea parties to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer.

Last year the Marie Curie shop on London Road held their own tea party which was very successful, so this year they are going to repeat it on July 3rd when there will be tea and cakes for sale, a tombola and the The 'Juke Box' selection. Requests will be played, at 20p a go, on "His Masters Voice" Gramaphone with 78rpm records, which proved very popular last summer.

Linda Jones, manager of the Alderley Edge charity shop said "Last year the event took off really well, we were lucky because the weather was gorgeous so we asked the council and took over the area outside. We raised £50 last year just from selling tea and cakes outside whilst the takings in the shop doubled that week which was really good."

Weather permitting the event will take place outside the shop again this year, between 10am and 2pm and Marie Curie are looking for donations of cakes to sell, either to be sliced up to enjoy with a cuppa or to be sold on their own.

So far more than 2,500 parties have been registered but Marie Curie are aiming for 8,800 tea parties to hit their target of raising £1 million. The money raised at every tea party, however big or small, will make a difference. It can be as simple as having a few friends round for tea and cakes at home to hosting a much bigger party with neighbours, colleagues, your local school or social club.

If you are interested in holding your own party, Marie Curie have put together a free pack containing invitations and material you can use to organise a tea party. To get your pack collect a leaflet from the London Road shop or visit their website. The official tea party season is from June 12th until July 12th but it doesn't matter if you are late.

If you would like to bake a cake(s) for the London Road tea party on July 3rd all donations will be gratefully received.
