Countdown to the World Cup

Excitement is building as the biggest football tournament in the world kicks off this Friday with 32 teams competing to win the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The World Cup is the most widely viewed sporting event in the world; an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 World Cup held in Germany, so we thought we'd take a look at the options for watching the matches in Alderley Edge - the village which is so often linked to the world of football.

Having installed two new 50 inch plasma screens, Panacea will be showing every match in the lounge bar, where they will be offering a special World Cup bar food menu and The Alderley Bar & Grill have also purchased a new TV so they can show all the England matches.

Gusto are taking bookings for the games, which can be seen in their upstairs function room, where the capacity is 45 guests.

Kiesha Spence, Business Development Manager at Gusto said "We can show all the matches but it would be based on bookings being made. We have one plasma upstairs and if there is the demand we will put large screens in the main restaurant as well but it is too early to say at this stage."

The Royal Oak on Heyes Lane will be showing every match of the tournament on three TV's located throughout the pub. Office parties are also welcome to book the function room, where a projector is available, and they will be offering Thai food platters, starting from £10, English buffets and barbecue's for the Friday evening and weekend matches.

Landlady Tracy O’Connell said "Table service is always available. Staff can be spotted by their England costumes complete with metalic red white and blue wigs and anyone found shouting at the refs during the match will be issued with a refs whistle. The lawn out the back is also available for friendly footy games during half time or at the end of the match."

Tracy added "We also welcome any flags to go along with our England flags that customers would like us to put up, many local companies have multinational employees and we want everyone to enjoy the World Cup as much as us."

Wherever you choose to watch the World Cup football, if indeed you do, we hope the atmosphere is fantastic and Come on England!
