Police operation targets drugs and drink

Special Constables targeted anti social behaviour caused by drugs and alcohol in a big police operation in Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Handforth at the weekend, April 16th and 17th.

Thirty two “Specials”, accompanied by dogs specially trained to detect traces of drugs, checked bars and pubs and patrolled the streets on the Friday night. Twenty six of the volunteer officers repeated the operation on the Saturday.

A suspected drug dealer was arrested and more than twenty people were searched after being picked out by the dogs. Drugs were recovered from five of them. Another man was arrested for drunken disorder.

Specials Inspector Kevin McHardy said, “The overall aim of operations such as this one is to maintain an atmosphere where people can have a night out in a safe well-regulated atmosphere where they do not have to worry about the possibility of violence or abuse from other people.

“We emphasized to licensees that we were there to help them keep order and to drive drugs out of their bars. The feedback from them, and from many people who were enjoying a night out, was very good. The operation had real impact”.

Earlier in the evening the Specials had toured parks and public spaces in the area used by teenage drinkers. They seized alcohol and dispersed the groups.
