900 mile taxi ride to beat volcanic ash

A local taxi company has recently taken a group of eight businessmen from the Stanneylands Hotel in Wilmslow across to France, via the ferry at a cost of £450.

Craig Ingham from Lynx Taxis said "With no flights taking off they were stranded in Wilmslow and needed to get to France. Coincidentally on the same ferry home there were eight passengers heading for Stockport so we brought them home at a cost of over £400. It has been amazing people are spending huge amounts taking taxis to reach their destinations."

With flights suspended until further notice Lynx Taxis are preparing to take 21 Americans from AstraZeneca on a 900 mile trip to Madrid tomorrow. Craig Ingham said "We have laid on a coach at a cost of £5000 so the total bill will be in excess of £6000. This will be the longest trip we've ever done.

"The coach will be heading back to the UK the following morning so we have 49 seats available if there is anybody stranded in Madrid that would like a lift to the UK." added Craig.

However whilst these long trips might make it look as though the cab firms are benefiting from the travel chaos with planes grounded due to volcanic ash Craig Ingham said "Taxi drivers are actually really struggling because nobody is moving anywhere. Nobody is going to the airport and airport runs usually make up a considerable amount of our income. Each week local businesses spends thousands with us but businesspeople aren't travelling so takings have been hit hard ."

Other notable taxi journeys in recent days include John Cleese taking a taxi across Europe at a cost of £3300 after being stranded in Norway.

Maybe the need for these trips needs questioning if we want to help the planet.
