National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has confirmed that UK airspace will remain closed until 19.00 on Saturday 17th.

Yesterday evening, NATS advised that some flights from Manchester, Liverpool and all airports north of those might be able to operate between 0400 and 10.00 but unfortunately this window of opportunity closed at 02:00 because the volcanic ash cloud has drifted north.

As a result, all arriving and departing flights to and from Manchester Airport remain suspended until further notice.

A spokesman from the airport said "Airport and airline staff will continue to provide whatever support and information we can to our passengers, some of whom remain in the terminals.

"We would like to express our sincere gratitude to passengers for their continuing patience and cooperation in these unprecedented circumstances.

"We would once again like to apologise to all our passengers for the inconvenience caused and thank all airport staff for their efforts over the last two days".

NATS (National Air Traffic Services) has confirmed overnight that the volcano eruption has strengthened and a new ash cloud is drifting towards Britain affecting UK airspace.

A spokesperson from Manchester airport said "Based on the overnight update from NATS, we do not expect Manchester Airport to open until 19:00 today at the earliest. Unfortunately, the latest forecasts indicate that a further deterioration in conditions is likely.

"The next update from NATS is expected at 15:00 this afternoon. Until we receive this information, it is absolutely essential that people contact their airline before travelling to the airport because even if Manchester Airport is able to reopen, schedules will take a several days to return to normal.

"The situation is changing rapidly and we fully appreciate the distress that this is causing for our passengers and staff. We would like to thank them all for their continued patience and understanding since this situation began on Thursday."
