Sharing memories for VE Day commemorations

With the 75th anniversary of VE Day coming up, Alderley History Group will be taking part in the commemoration by putting together a collection of local photos and people's memories.

Originally the display was to take place in the Heritage Centre at the west end of St Philip & St James Church but due to the current lockdown they are now encouraging their members and local residents to place their photos and memories on the Alderley History Group Facebook page.

John Wallace said "We are inviting you all to share any photos, leaflets, newspaper cuttings, that you have kept ,on this Facebook page, and chat about memories that you and your family have, about World War 2 -  in particular those local to the Alderley and surrounding areas."

Alderley History Group will begin to display pictures from this weekend so by Friday 8th May, which is the anniversary of VE Day, they hope to have a good selection which they can keep adding to over the following week.

To kick off the display they were given a picture (see above) and memory by one of their well known members.

Alan Garner, who remembers this sports day, said "The VE sports day was for children only, if I remember correctly, and it was held on Norbury's Rec, the field off Chorley Hall Lane. I was given half a crown for winning; which, if known, would have disqualified me from all future athletic events because they were strictly amateur, and by being paid I was technically a professional. So I kept quiet."

He and many of his troops were based in and around Knutsford.
