King's School students were jumping for joy after producing a record set of GCSE results which saw a massive leap from last year.

A remarkable 35% of all grades are at 9/8 (A*), up by 8%. An impressive 60% of grades are at 9-7 (A*-A), up 12% on last year, and 82% of grades are 9-6 (A*-B), up 9% on last year.

Over a third of pupils got at least nine GCSEs at 9-7 grades (A*/A). 10 students achieved ten 9/8s (A*s) and over 60% of pupils got at least five 9-7 grades (A*/A).

Among the very best were a talented trio of high flyers from the Wilmslow and Alderley area, once again one of the top performing locations for King's top students.

From left to right: Brilliant mathematician Wadoud Charbak, 16 from Handforth got the top A hat in Further Maths with six 9s, one 8, two 7s and a six and ultimately wants to read Medicine. Athlete and hockey player Olivia Hunter, 16, from Alderley Edge got two 9s, seven 8s and one 6 and also wants to read Medicine, while hockey player Joe Tabachnik from Nether Alderley got seven 9s, three 8s and one A and wants to read Computer Science or Law.

King's Headmaster Dr Simon Hyde said: "GCSEs are not getting any easier, if anything the opposite is true. Nor is the grading criteria any less rigorous. Rather these superb results are due to the hard work of a particularly impressive year group and to King's strong focus on contemporary pedagogy which aims to enable all our young men and women to realise their full potential. It is important to recognize that at the same time as achieving these impressive results, these young people are playing a full role in the sporting, musical and creative life of the school and many are representing clubs and their county in sport and contributing to choirs and conservatoires too."

Also celebrating a string of top grades were (from left): talented athlete and sprint champion Sam Warburton, from Chelford, who got one 9, two 8s, three 7s and four sixes and wants to work in social engineering. Hockey player Jack Ancell, from Mobberley, who got four 8s, five 7s and two 6s and wants to work in agriculture. Sportswoman and Duke of Edinburgh award holder Betty Kemp, from Goostrey, who got one 9, three 8s, five 7s and one 6. Rugby player Oliver Gandy, from Knutsford got three nines and six 8s and wants to use his excellent GCSE as a stepping stone towards reading Medicine.
