Gangster killed by gunshot

The body found by police, at the Brook Lane home of local business man Arran Coghlan on Tuesday afternoon, has today been formally identified as Stephen Akinyemi, aged 44, of Manchester.

Although it had previously been reported that the victim was killed as a result of a stabbing, a home office post mortem has established Mr Akinyem's cause of death to be a gunshot wound.

Stephen 'Aki' Akinyemi of Cheetham Hill in Manchester was reported to be a founder member of the Cheetham Hill gang. Traditionally one of the most powerful Manchester gangs.

The Cheetham Hill gang achieved notoriety in the early 1990's during the rise of gun crime in Manchester, when the gang was understood to have been heavily involved in the drugs trade.

A spokesman from Cheshire Constabulary confirmed "A 39 year old man is continuing to assist police with their enquiries into the circumstances surrounding Mr Akinyemi’s death."
