The disturbance at Brook Lane yesterday afternoon took place at the home of Arran Coghlan, 39, a business man who has previously been cleared of two gangland murders.

Coghlan, who had dialled 999 himself, has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was found stabbed to death in his home. Coghlan is currently under police guard in hospital, receiving treatment for knife wounds to his upper body. A spokesman from Cheshire Police said "His injuries are not believed to be life threatening."

The victim is understood to be Stephen Akinyemi from Cheetham Hill, and the two men are believed to have known each other.

Coghlan, who has previously been described in court as a drugs boss, was cleared of murdering Chris Little in the mid 1990’s. Mr Little was shot dead at the wheel of his car in Marple.

Then, along with five other men, Coghlan was accused of murdering David Barnshaw, who was found in a burnt out car in Lower Bredbury in September 1999. The case collapsed in 2003 because the police withheld information regarding another suspect.

Police and forensic teams are at the scene but Brook Lane is now open. A spokesman from Cheshire Police said "HM Coroner has been informed and a Home Office post mortem will take place today."

Anyone who has any information that they believe may assist Police with this investigation should contact Cheshire Constabulary on 0845 458 0000.
