Village appeal to commemorate 100 years since the end of First World War

This November will mark 100 years since the end of the First World War so a group representing the Parish Council and the churches in Alderley Edge has come together to ensure that the village commemorates it well.

The group aims to create a tribute to all those in the village who gave their lives in that war, and at the same time raise funds to help veterans of more recent armed conflicts.

Geoff Hall, Vice Chairman of Alderley Edge Parish Council, said "A charity called Remembered has commissioned the artist Martin Barraud to design installations featuring silhouettes of First World War soldiers. He has created a number of very touching figures under the title: There but not there. The largest one is a 6 feet tall outline of a WW1 soldier with his head bowed, and we would like to buy at least one, which will be placed at selected locations round the village and at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day. The photos show two of these figures in Arundel."

The cost of these full size figures is £625 excluding VAT and the Parish Council has agreed to pledge the first £325 as long as others (individuals, businesses and other organisations) will donate the remaining £300. If they raise more than this then they can purchase additional figures, and any surplus will be donated directly to the charity.

Councillor Geoff Hall added "This will not only benefit the village. It is part of a nationwide initiative, which will link us to communities across the country, with Alderley Edge being one of the few places in Cheshire to be featured on an online map as part of the 'Remembered Network'. (At the moment the only other Cheshire village to be listed is Tarporley). It will also raise funds for charities benefiting members of our armed services who have made more recent sacrifices on our behalf, such as Walking with the Wounded, Help for Heroes and Combat Stress. Anyone who would like to make a donation should email our Parish clerk, Anne Ross. Anne will then provide details of how you can make a donation online through your bank. Or you can send a cheque made out to Alderley Edge Parish Council (marked 'Tommy Appeal' on the back) to Anne Ross, Alderley Edge Parish Council, Festival Hall, Talbot Road, Alderley Edge SK9 7HR.

If you would like further details about the appeal email Geoff Hall or Mandy Parr.
